ELTE Institute of Psychology is a distinguished flagship institution for training psychologists in Hungary, as well as providing the psychological components for the teacher training programme at the biggest teacher training University in the country.

In addition to the Bachelor’s programmes, ELTE Institute of Psychology provides specialised postgraduate continuing education programmes and PhD programmes with rights for habilitation. The number of students in teacher’s programmes at ELTE is up to the thousands, and their preparation for professional life by the experts of ELTE creates an opportunity as well as an obligation for them to keep in contact with the practical fields of education. This latter explains why we have the most significant tradition for training professionals on a postgraduate level in Educational Psychology, School Psychology and Counselling Psychology, as well as having these specialisations institutionalised here.

The emergence of the differentiated forms of student counselling that has been established at ELTE first in the country is a professional development tied to the Institute. On the one hand, it has provided services to the entire University, on the other hand, it has been an area for gaining experience in the field and applying counselling psychology in a specific way. The groundbreaking theoretical work that our associates have been exerting to lay the foundations and institutionalise the field of Health Psychology is part of the intellectual identity of the Institute. Last, but not least, after the historical-political changes, the renewed interest of students about to the market economy has lead to heightened importance of Organizational Psychology, Economic Psychology, Political Psychology, and Human Resource Management. These fields are open to social issues, aspiring to translate scientific results into practice and have an ever-increasing role in the training of psychologists on all levels. 

It is part of the history of ELTE Institute of Psychology that its predecessors are responsible for preserving the continuity of the academic cultivation of psychology.

The number of the teaching and research staff exceeds a hundred, while the students of the Institute are over 1500.

We have more than 30 ongoing research and development projects, and we cultivate extensive international connections. In the last ten years, the Institute has hosted international events for nearly all sub-disciplines as well as the European Meeting of Psychologists. Our associates play a leading role in international professional organisations. The Institute also has a programme in English. Its high level of professional standards and excellent reputation reflect the fact that ELTE’s Master’s programme stands the test of all international comparisons.
